Starting the Game

Teen Patti is played with a standard 52 card deck. Aces rank the highest and 2’s the lowest. Although the game can be played by 2, the ideal group is between 4 to 7 players. The players choose who the dealer will be by picking the person with the best hand from an initial round. After the opening hand, the winner from that hand will be the dealer for the next round.

Before Teen Patti can begin, it is also necessary to agree the value of the minimum bet. This process is called the ante or boot. All the players place their bets into a money pot and whoever wins the best three card hand wins the pot. The ante and the rest of the money that’s in the pot provide an incentive to play the hand rather than to fold, and this makes the game very interesting.

The cards are dealt anti-clockwise until each player has three cards. They can choose to leave the cards face down on the table and play Blind or look at their 3 card hand before betting, and play Seen.

The Betting Process

Before Teen Patti begins, each player bets the agreed minimum wager. For the first round of the game, the ante is the “Current Stake” or “Chaal” in Hindi. The value of the minimum bet to stay in the game depends on whether the player is playing Blind or Seen. Seen players must bet twice as much as Blind players if they want to continue playing,  while a Blind player must put in at least the current stake, but not more than twice the current stake.

The betting continues in this way until the last surviving Teen Patti player wins all the money in the pot, or until the last two players expose their cards. The player whose hand has a higher ranking wins the pot.

Limits

  • Limits may apply to the amount a player might bet or raise. A Fixed Limit is the maximum that can be raised according to the last bet. The maximum bet is always twice the last bet.
  • A Spread Limit is the maximum that can be raised. It can be any amount within the specified limit.
  • A Pot Limit is the maximum that can be raised, up to the size of the whole pot.

Ranking of hands

Double – 2 cards of the same rank.

High Card – The highest card when neither the player nor the dealer holds a pair.
